More than fifty years has passed since the special training and research programs in Statistics were launched at Central University of Finance and Economics (CUFE) in 1951. In 1978, the teaching and research group for Planning and Statistics was established when the university was resumed this year. In 1984, the Department of Economic Management was established based on the teaching and research group for Planning and Statistics, and the teaching and research group was renamed to teaching and research group for Statistics. CUFE started the program of undergraduate students with the major of Statistics in 1998, and the master program in 2000. Statistics was selected as one of the university’s key disciplines in 2002. The Department of Statistics was established in 2003, and the Ph.D. program in Statistics was launched this year. In the year of 2006, the School of Statistics was established, and the discipline of Quantitative Economics was incorporated into School of Statistics from the Information School.
The School of Statistics has three teaching and research groups focusing on statistical theory, applied statistics, and quantitative economics respectively. There are three research centers and one institute in the school, i.e. China Center for Economic Statistics Research, the research center for Economic Data, the research center for Statistics and Market Survey, and the institute of Quantitative Economics. It also has a modern computer lab for statistical research and education. Currently, the school offers master and Ph.D. programs in Statistics and Quantitative Economics.
Relying on the advantages in the disciplines of Banking, Finance, and National Economics of CUFE, the school is focusing on the teaching and research areas of National Accounting, statistical analysis of the Macro-economy and Quantitative Economics, emphasizing the combination of statistical theory and empirical analysis.
At present the school has a faculty with a reasonable combination of young, middle-aged and old scholars. Some of the faculty members are academic leaders in their research areas, and many of the faculty members are graduated from famous universities and institutes in China, such as Peking University, Renmin University of China, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Xiamen University etc.. There are five professors (four of them are Ph.D. student supervisors) among the twenty faculty members, and more than half of the faculty members have got their PhD degree. The school has undertaken many research projects sponsored by the National Social Science Fund, the National Natural Science Fund, funds from the Ministry of Education and other government organizations, and funds from International organization, etc. Some faculty members also hold important positions in national academic organizations, such as the National Statistical Society of China, National Accounting Society of China, Chinese Input-Output Association, China National Conditions Research Association, and so on..
The School of Statistics has close relationship with statistical agencies, statistical research orgnizations, and other universities, home and abroad. In recent years, our faculty members have attended many influential national and international academic meeting, and visited many famous universities in American, Great Britain, Canada, Australia, and Tai Wan for academic exchanges and advanced studies. Periodically, we invite national and international renowned scholars to give lectures at our university.
The school offers bachelor, master, and Ph.D. programs at present, and is concentrating on cultivating high-level talented personnel with sound background in statistics and quantitative analysis, who are suitable for various kinds of positions in the government, financial agencies, companies, research organizations etc. Many of our graduate students are now holding important positions in the government sectors, financial sectors, multinational companies, and so on.
